چکیده

After pioneering work in the 1980s, plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) and plasma-based ion implantation and deposition (PBIID) can now be considered mature technologies for surface modification and thin film deposition. This review starts by looking at the historical development and recalling the basic ideas of PBII. Advantages and disadvantages are compared to conventional ion beam implantation and physical vapor deposition for PBII and PBIID, respectively, followed by a summary of the physics of sheath dynamics, plasma and pulse specifications, plasma diagnostics, and process modelling. The review moves on to technology considerations for plasma sources and process reactors. PBII surface modification and PBIID coatings are applied in a wide range of situations. They include the by-now traditional tribological applications of reducing wear and corrosion through the formation of hard, tough, smooth, low-friction and chemically inert phases and coatings, e.g. for engine components. PBII has become viable for the formation of shallow junctions and other applications in microelectronics. More recently, the rapidly growing field of biomaterial synthesis makes use of IEEE TPS 0968 –LBNL-57610 – 2 PBII and PBIID to alter surfaces of or produce coatings on surgical implants and other biomedical devices. With limitations, also non-conducting materials such as plastic sheets can be treated. The major interest in PBII processing originates from its flexibility in ion energy (from a few eV up to about 100 keV), and the capability to efficiently treat, or deposit on, large areas, and (within limits) to process non-flat, three-dimensional workpieces, including forming and modifying metastable phases and nanostructures. Index Terms – Plasma-based ion implantation, ion-assisted thin film deposition, pulsed bias IEEE TPS 0968 –LBNL-57610 – 3

Influence of nitrogen ion implantation on the nanostructure and corrosivity of Ni/stainless steel substrates

Ion implantation is a surface modification technology to produce new material on the surface by impingement of high energy ions from the ion accelerator. In this work, AISI 304 stainless steels were coated with 90 nm Ni film by electron beam deposition and implanted by a flow of 5×1017 N cm−2 at 400 K temperature with different implantation energies of 10, 20, 30 and 40 keV. The prepared sample...

Influence of Ni Deposition and Subsequent N+ Ion Implantation at Different Implantation Energies on Nano-Structure and Corrosion Behavior of 316 Stainless Steels

Nickel films of 300 nm thickness were deposited by electron beam evaporation at room temperature on 316 stainless steels. Corrosion studies of Ni coated 316 SS have been performed after N+ ion implantation at different energies of 20, 40, 60 and 80 keV. The structure and surface morphology of the films were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM) an...

Plasma-based ion implantation utilising a cathodic arc plasma

Plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) is usually carried out with isotropic gaseous plasmas, such as a discharge in nitrogen. More recently, it has been applied using drifting plasmas, such as those produced by cathodic arcs, in order to allow efficient implantation of metallic species. The condensable nature of a cathodic arc plasma allows for the deposition of ion-stitched thin film coatings, ...
